The General Thimmaiah Memorial stands as a tribute to one of India's most distinguished military leaders, General Kodandera Subayya Thimmaiah. Located in the heart of Madikeri, this memorial commemorates the life and achievements of Coorg's legendary son who served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army from 1957 to 1961.
The memorial is housed in "Sunny Side", which was the residence of General Thimmaiah. It has been converted into a museum that showcases memorabilia, weapons, and uniforms from his illustrious career. A war tank kept at the entrance is a major attraction.
General Kodandera Subayya Thimmaiah was born on March 31, 1906, in Madikeri, Coorg. He joined the British Indian Army in 1926 and served with distinction in World War II. Known for his exceptional leadership and strategic acumen, he rose through the ranks to become the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army in 1957.
General Thimmaiah played a crucial role in the modernization of the Indian Army and was instrumental in establishing the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla. His contributions to India's defense forces during the early years of independence were invaluable, and he is remembered as one of the most respected military leaders in Indian history.
The memorial was established to honor his memory and to inspire future generations with his exemplary service to the nation. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military leaders in protecting and serving the country.
